Edwin Loh: Healthy Diet Advice on Whole Foods, Carbohydrates, Fats, and Proteins (Part 1)

Jennifer October 8th, 2010

A poor diet can have an injurious impact on health, causing deficiency diseases such as scurvy, beriberi, and kwashiorkor; health-threatening conditions like obesity and metabolic syndrome; and such common chronic systemic diseases as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. There are six major classes of nutrients: carbohydrates, fats, minerals, protein, vitamins, and water. Carbohydrates Choose healthy carbohydrates and fiber sources, especially whole grains, for long lasting energy. In addition to being delicious and satisfying, whole grains are rich in phytochemicals and antioxidants, which help to protect against coronary heart disease, certain cancers, and diabetes. Studies have shown people who eat more whole grains tend to have a healthier heart. A quick definition of healthy carbs and unhealthy carbs: Healthy carbs (sometimes known as good carbs) include whole grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables. Healthy carbs are digested slowly, helping you feel full longer and keeping blood sugar and insulin levels stable. Unhealthy carbs (or bad carbs) are foods such as white flour, refined sugar and white rice that have been stripped of all bran, fiber and nutrients. Unhealthy carbs digest quickly and cause spikes in blood sugar levels and energy. Fiber: An essential component of a healthy diet Dietary fiber, found in plant foods (fruit, vegetables and whole grains) is essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system. Is it FDA approved?

Can't live like this I need to sleep help?

Jennifer September 21st, 2010

I’m 17 and I desperately need to cure this sleep problem going on for a yr before it continues and ruins my life even further.
I tried milk.
Melatonin pills.
Exercise/activities.
Positive thinking because I’m scared that I will die in my sleep and never wake up.
Dark cool room.
Healthy diet.
Herbal teas and other flower cures for sleep.
I feel mostly depressed at night.
I need a nice deep refreshing sleep like I used to. Why doesn’t anything work? Anyone overcome this annoying disorder?

vitamin/herbal supplement recommendations?

Jennifer September 15th, 2010

My friend and I are planning a trip to Vitamin World on Sunday. I have shopped there before, but want to propel the experience beyond multi-vitamins and ginseng pills to replace my coffee.

I am 18 and a fairly healthy person. I eat well and understand and practice the principles of a healthy diet. I am also in a muscle tone and development class that has exposed me to a new realm of muscle tone that I can achieve. I am becoming pretty passionate about healthy eating and gaining (and maintaining) muscle. I’ve been hearing about omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil, and amino acids lately and am not sure which supplements are most beneficial.

So what should I spring for?!
(And what will they do for me?)
