Advice on 1st time running a Marathon?

Jennifer April 1st, 2011

The small town I live in holds a marathon in the summer every year, yet as I actually dislike most sports I’ve never taken part. I’ve decided though, that I’d like to try, and to get sponsored and raise money for the victims of the earthquake in Japan where I currently reside (though I’m not in an affected area). Though the marathon is a few months ahead, I’m sure that money and donations will still be needed to aid the results of the devastation.

Therefore, I need people’s help and advice. But there a few points…

01. As I mentioned, I’m not exactly the sporty type. ^^;
I hated P.E. in school and used to try and avoid any sort of sport. It’s not that I don’t like moving around; walking is one of my favourite hobbies and I often take long strolls outside in the summer. However, I am, though it’s still a little, a lot more sporty than I was. In the last 3 or 4 years I’ve been trying to do a little of exercise every day, mostly mat work like sit-ups or aerobics. I even did have a phase of hitting the sports centre and running round the track for half an hour, but I haven’t been for almost a year now…

02. I’m very stiff.
In that, I’m not bendy at all!! I can only just about touch my toes with the tips of my fingers! I’m not sure if this would be a burden to me running, but I do know that stretching is important before and after…

03. My body type
Considering I hardly did any sports yet inhaled food I’m not overweight. Some may even say I’m slim, though I think my tall height of 5ft 9 (177cm) helps balance me out. The one thing I think I am better at is that I’m able to jog over a long distance for a long amount of time at a steady pace, and I’m awful at sprinting and running fast. Embarrassed as I am to say this online but as it may be needed to know, my weight at the moment is around 66~67kg (11stone). I used to be around 64~65kg (10 stone) but I’ve put on weight ><

04. The Marathon is on the 11th June.
I realise that this only gives me just over 2 months…so in terms of training I know that I’m probably pushed for time. In general, unless my workload suddenly increases, I should be able to hit the sports centre every day.

05. Which Marathon should I take part in?
There are 3 types; the Half Marathon (21.097km), Quarter Marathon (10.548km) and the One Eighth Marathon (5.274km). I’m thinking I’d like to push myself a little so I’d like to go for the Half Marathon but…what do people think?

So all in all I ask you for the best training tips!
Do you think I don’t have enough time to train?
Would it be better if I lost some weight? Or make changes to my diet?
What stretches do you recommend?
Should I train every day or every few days?
How long should I run for each session in terms of time and length?

Any advice would be wonderful! Thank you!!

How to approach my Japanese doctor about this?

Jennifer January 15th, 2011

I know this is a little off category, but I think you nice people at the Japan forum will be able to give me the best advice on how to approach this.

Ive been on a diet for the last 2 months or so, and Im failing to lose weight, despite really, really gambatte-ing, giving up alcohol and burning many more calories than I consume on a daily basis. I want to go to my doctor to ask him or her what I need to do, and also to rule out a medical cause.

First of all – what kind of doctor should I be seeing about this? Im going to a big hospital, not a diet clinic, so what doctor would be best? If you could tell me this in Japanese it would be helpful.

Second of all do any of you guys have any idea about how to approach this issue.
I know that the doctor is almost definitely going to think Im a fat gaijin who sits on the sofa eating chocolate every day, but Im not. I want to be taken seriously because Im really, really struggling. Its really hard to be this size in Japan, and its got to the point where even my inlaws agree that I am "kawaii sou" because they can SEE how hard Im trying and that nothing is happening.

Any sincere advice would be appreciated. I have already replaced one meal a day with konnyaku or shirataki … :)
sorry I should add I AM and have been exercising too.
Im doing 40 minutes a day cycling (in the mama charie with my 14kg kid) plus walking everywhere that I used to cycle – Ie around town, to the supermarket, which is adding up to about another hour a day.

Its just really depressing how slowly its going … Especially surrounded by all these skinny Japanese girls who eat about double what I do.

plz give me the whole answer!!!!!?

Is it alright to bring about 200 tea packets in checked luggage from Japan to America?

Jennifer July 27th, 2010

Hi, in about 5 days I will be flying to USA from Japan. Is it alright to bring tea packets? There are about… 30 tea packets in each little plastic bag, and there are 7 plastic bags. They are labeled either "Dokudami" or "Diet" by the manufacturer. Is it okay to bring these through checked luggage? Do you think that they will question what it is? I have the 2 of the boxes (one dokudami, one diet) that the plastic bags came in.

Can anyone help me with this political and econmic unit test?
